Attorneys for Norman Public Schools are denying that a student was sexually assaulted following a Norman North High School wrestling meet in January 2016.
NPS attorneys responded to the new lawsuit describing the incident as “hazing” while denying that it was a case of sexual assault.
The original suit, brought by the State of Oklahoma, alleged felony first-degree counts of rape by instrumentation. On March 31, former Norman North wrestling team member Tanner Shipman entered a plea of no contest to three lesser misdemeanor charges of assault and battery.
The new petition filed last month by the victim’s family targets the school district, alleging that NPS was negligent and failed to provide adequate training and supervision to protect students during the bus trip.
